PV stands for photovoltaic, the technology that allows solar panels to convert daylight into electricity.
Solar PV systems are made up of multiple panels, each containing layers of semi-conducting material (usually silicon). When daylight hits the surface, it creates a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. This is then passed through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) – the type of electricity your home uses.
Solar PV is different to solar thermal, which heats water. PV is about power – generating electricity to run your appliances, charge your car or heat your home.
Even on cloudy days, solar PV panels keep working – and thanks to modern technology, they’re now more efficient, more compact and more affordable than ever.
For most homes, the payback period is between 8 and 10 years – although this often depends on how much electricity you use and whether you add a battery.
We provide a personalised 25-year savings forecast with every quote. It shows how much electricity you’ll generate, how much you’ll use, how much you’ll sell back to the grid, and how long it will take for your system to pay for itself.

Yes, you will be able to sign a contract with your energy provider either under the SEG (Smart Export Guarantee) or more exciting options from market leaders such as Octopus. You will be paid a rate for each kWh you put back to the grid. This will depend on your contracted partner.
No. Contrary to some of the information out there, solar panels are generally maintenance-free and rainwater is enough to keep them clean – and we can usually rely on the good old British weather for plenty of that!
We don’t, for the simple reason that it is not the best value for our customers. “Interest-free” deals are often offset with inflated pricing. For those needing finance, a high-street home improvement loan is typically better value. What are the options I should consider?
At GS Renewables we don’t have a huge range of add-ons because we don’t believe you need them. We do have a selection of recommendations that will be offered with your quotation.
Solar Battery
Many of our customers choose to have a battery to store surplus energy. A solar battery will typically save you an extra 29% on your energy bills. We’ll advise you on whether a battery option is right for you.
Bird Proofing
Bird nesting (and the resulting droppings and debris) can be a problem, especially if you live in coastal areas. This simple and affordable option prevents birds being able to nest under your panels by applying a metal mesh around the border of your system.
Zappi
Zappi is a smart electric vehicle (EV) charging system that has been specifically designed for Solar PV, where your surplus energy can be transferred to the system.
Solar iBoost+ immersion diverter
Automatically transfer unused excess electricity into your hot water tank without the need for a solar battery, which can offer additional savings on gas or oil.
